Audioboo: Tech Tuesday
May 19th
Audioboo is often called an audio version of twitter, which in many ways it is. It was initially an app for the iPhone, but now you can phone in from any phone. The idea is very simple. You press the record button and talk into the phone like normal and when you’ve finished press the stop button. Send and the audio file is on the Audioboo site as an MP3. As an example here’s my first attempt.
[audio http://boos.audioboo.fm/attachments/69841/Recording.mp3]There’s a bit more to it than that. You can pause and resume recordings, but you can also add a lot more to them too. For instance if you visit the page where I’m at Caerleon’s latrines, not only do you get the recording but also a photo of the place and a map link so you can see where I am. The same recording also shows a problem for anyone recording outdoors – wind noise. Despite that Audioboo has potential for use on archaeological and historical projects.

3G is essential because you can only record More >
Thinking about Skype: Talkback?
Feb 26th
I’ve been thinking more about what I can do with Skype and podcasting. I’m wondering if a talkback section would be a good idea. For instance I’d like to do something on the Tomb of Jesus by the Discovery Channel. What I could do is open my Skype Voicemail so that people could record their opinions. Would there be interest in this?
Also would a direct phone number you can dial into the voicemail help? If I get such a number, the first would probably be based in the USA. Would there be a specific geographic location that would be the best place to site it in, or is everything beyond the local neighbourhood ‘long-distance’. I ask as there’s a number XXX-XXX-CLIO based in Washington DC which tempted me, but there’s no point buying it if a phone number on the coast is more expensive for the average caller than one based more centrally.
Archaeology and Podcasting
Dec 4th
Clearly my newsreader isn’t working again. I was excited to discover that Tom Goskar has a substantial article in this month’s Podcast User magazine, about his work with Archaeocast. However looking at his site I see he’s already put up a post telling everyone about it.
It’s a good article. I’ve been hanging back on podcasting for a few reasons. However, he makes a particularly powerful point when he says that 6,000 downloads for episode one exceeds anything you could hope for with a public lecture. I think in the longer term a large back catalogue could be a major asset for niche podcasters.
No comment option enabled, because you can all tell him how good he is at his site.
